Wired Tulip
January 2023 – Approximately a 7.5″ tall wire sculpture of two tulips. The objective was to make a two-dimensional image three-dimensional while using three different binding techniques. I chose tulips because I thought that it would be a more interesting subject that you can hold and use as decoration compared to a shoe or a pet’s face.
The binding techniques I used were looped, braiding, and hatching. The base that holds the tulips up is 3 leaves connected together. Those same leaves can be seen connected to the tulips. This creates some cohesion between the flower and the “pot”. The tulips can be taken out of the base and rotated or bent to whichever way someone desires.
This was the first wire sculpture I had done and I really enjoyed it. In the beginning, it was difficult to learn how to manipulate the wire and temporarily keep it in place while you bind. Over time you get used to it slipping out of your hands as well as hurting your hands.
