A Remake of Saint Lucy by Francesco del Cossa

September 2023 – A 16″ x 12″ oil painting of a section of Saint Lucy. The objective was to replicate a Renaissance painting down to the brush strokes. The reference was from Francesco Cossa’s painting but I changed the color of the eyes and skin to resemble mine to make this piece more personal. I wanted to make sure that I wasn’t copying everything in the painting.

Layering, blending, and starting with a toned canvas were experimented with. I used a limited color palette of red, blue, yellow, and white for this painting which helped me get used to referencing the color wheel. I’ve heard multiple times that the best way to practice is by studying the masters.
