Coiled Vessel, Fine China Inspired

October 2023 – A 10″ x 10″ coiled vessel used as a decorative accent to a home. The objective was to replicate a style we found fascinating in ceramic history. The freedom to choose the vessel shape, carving technique, and glaze was granted.

I chose this vessel to be inspired by the designs featured on fine china kitchen wear. The iconic color blue and the repetitive geometric patterns are key elements of the style. I feel that this style is beautiful and can look elegant despite the easy patterns.

The challenge in this project was time and consistency. When creating this vessel I did not throw it on a pottery wheel. As a result, I had to finish the pot before it got leather-hard. Once finished, the fragile handles were placed and I had to carve the vessel before the handles dried out and cracked.
